Solar Path Light Placement Tips

There's a bit of an art to landscaping with solar LED path lights. Whether your garden style is formal and geometric -- or informal and very organic in layout.

In more formal garden settings, you really want to place path lights with a good degree of precision to reinforce the landscape style. Careful measuring and placement -- equidistant spacing along walkways helps. Using pairs precisely opposite along paths, grouping in fours on geometric corners helps guide both your eyes, and your guests navigating a nighttime landscape.

Alternate spacing of path lighting along curved walks (tho again consistently measured and spaced) helps maintain a visual aesthetic. This works well on the outside edges and inside curve of more meandering paths to help guests be aware of the wandering route.

Regardless of your garden style -- pairing solar lights at the bottom of steps, and again at the top of the stairway helps indicate where they start, where they end - and insures safe navigation at night.

Given the affordability of many solar landscape light sets - lean towards MORE rather than fewer, especially since cost per light is lower in quantity. There may be instances where a special garden feature deserves to be surrounded by 3 or more lights -- in addition to those needed along the route.

Solar LED Spotlights : Focused Garden Lighting

Direct, focused light exactly where you want it can be achieved with innovative solar-powered landscape spot-lights. Note in this pair of garden spot lights featured here, the solar panel can be angled for optimal sun exposure.

8 LED Super-Bright Bulbs

8 Super-Brite LEDS in its reflector can draw night time attention to garden statuary, fountains or other water features, or areas of special interest in the landscape. Unlike many solar fixtures which may only use 1 or 2 rechargeable batteries, this unit uses 3 AAA NiMh cells to assure bright lighting for it's multiple bulbs.

Shed Lights : Solar Panel Outdoors, Light Fixture Inside

A unique kind of LED light fixture are SOLAR SHED LIGHTS: one ideal for un-wired outbuildings that don't have electricity. Ultimately, they're indoor lights that may be LED, Halogen or Flourescent - but have an outside solar panel to recharge them. Shed lights also tend to have an easy-reach pull cord, so you can turn on the lights easily on entering the darkend shed. Most come with long 15' or so cords to allow maximum versatility in both the solar panel - and light fixture's placement.

Solar LED Security Lighting : Motion Detection From Dusk To Dawn

With the freedom to place them anywhere, motion-detecting solar security flood-light solutions are becoming popular. Mounted on the house, garage, a shed, or as a post light -- Some now feature separate solar panels with a screw mounting bracket - that let you place the sun panel optimally for recharging, but place the motion-detector flood where you really want the light. Smart! But for compact, 1-piece ease of installation: Innovative wall-mount seucrity lights featuring solar panels atop the front beveled edge may be optimal - particularly on south-east-west facing walls.
This flexibility in solar panel positioning insures they can get adequate solar recharging during the day and still provide the intermittent, short-term LED lighting when needed - all night long. <-- And that's important to note: Because of the brief, intermittent lighting motion detectors call for - you'll find they perform consistently well the entire night.
Look for motion detector LED lights that have adjustments for both dusk-sensing time, and for the sensitivity or time-length of the 'on' cycle. Fine tuning these can insure optimal response, brightness and function.

LED Garden Light Bulbs : Warm White? Amber? Super-Bright?

Outdoor garden and landscaping lighting fixtures are seeing alot of technology changes. And along with it, a wider range of LED brightness and colors. Solar garden lights used largely amber LEDs for the longest time; dim but complimentary to the greens of garden foliage. Some solar path and walk lights - and certainly multi-bulb LED security lighting solutions are now starting to use multiple bulbs to up the brightness levels. Solar pathway lights are now coming in 2 LED or 3 LED lamp solutions for brighter illumination. And the colors are shifting too - away from amber to brighter 'natural white' and somewhat cooler blue-ish 'Super-Bright' LEDs. Which you prefer is up to your aesthetic. But as you shop for Solar LED landscape lighting solutions - keep these LED color variations in mind as you either mix or match fixtures from various companies to create the kind of outdoor lighting design you're looking for.

LED Solar Lighting - More Choices Than Ever

Solar yard lights are a very popular, inexpensive and easy to install method of adding style and safety to light to your lawn, garden and outdoor living spaces. Solar LEDs can to line pathways, in and around swimming pools in order to make safer to access and enjoy at night.
Rechargable, battery powered LED outdoor lights are available in a staggering range of not only aesthetic styles to compliment your homes style and decor - but for specific uses. Powered by the sun's rays and needing no extensive above or below ground wiring installation and expense -- Solar LED fixture styles include:
  • Flood and Spot lights
  • Hanging lamps
  • Motion detection security lights
  • Garden Path lights and lanterns
  • Post, Bollard and Pillar lights
  • Unobtrusive garden rock lights
  • Street address number lights
  • Deck and dock lights
  • Floating lights for swimming pools
  • Novelty Lights and Party Lanterns
There is a type of outdoor LED light for almost every use! Where ever you are currently using electrical lights in your yard and garden, there is a sune-powered rechargeable LED yard light to take its place to save money throughout the year.
Solar lights are considered to be an ecologically friendly choice, but you don't have to be “green” in order to enjoy the convenience and security of this type of yard light. They're simply simpler to install, safer to operate, and easier to relocate than any AC-powered or Low-voltage fixture.
Everything is often completely self contained in these lights as stand alone systems. If a power outage takes out the electricity in an area, those who have only regular lights are out of luck as far as being able to see outside. But, those with solar lights have their lighting system just like always. In full, daily sunlight conditions you'll find that LED solar lights will work uninterrupted longer than ever before - enough to last the entire time it is dark outside. The lights will still have power on cloudy or grey days but the will not last as long.

The longevity and brightness of LED light bulbs as yard lights is a real plus, especially fixtures using the latest Super-Bright LED technology.
It is a lot safer to deal with solar lights than electric lights, and don't require an electrician. Sunshine-powered lights are becoming more and more common.
There's no cost to use these lights other than the one time amount you pay for the initial purchase. Solar yard lights is a pretty smart idea

NiCad vs NiMh Solar Landscape Light Batteries

Most (but not all) solar path and yard lighting sets come with rechargeable NiCd - or Nickle Cadmium batteries. In the bigger world of electronic products and rechargers we've seen NiMh - Nickle Metal Hydride batteries become far more common and readily available off the shelf. Regardless of which your solar lights came with, there may be reasons to stay with the type of batteries that came with your solar lighting set.

The charging and operational characteristics of NiCd and NiMh batteries are very different. For example, NiCD batteries can store a charge longer and drain slower on the shelf - and can help your solar LED fixtures perform well after an extended sequence of overcast days. NiCd batteries also are more in-line with the slow, daily trickle-charging they'd experience during daylight hours - and not the rapid-charging that is expected of NiMh batteries for consumer electronics. The circuitry and design of the solar cell panel in the light itself is optimized for the specific kind of battery it originally came with - and swapping battery types may not be in your best interests in terms of overnight longevity performance, light output, or the life of the solar charging circuitry.
Nicad vs Nickle Hydride Batteries For Landscape Lights
That said, it can't hurt to try. I have some old Malibu LED tier lights that came with 600Mah NiCad batteries that I swapped a few 2000mAh Sanyo Eneloop NiMh cells into and they're certainly performing better than the 4 year old NiCd ones - that's for sure.

Check out this complete Sanyo Eneloop Power Pack with Battery Charger, 12 (TWELVE!) AA and 2 AAA Batteries Plus 4 C & 4 D Size Adapters. Now I've got plenty of cells for my landscape needs - as well as around the house. If you've priced Duracell batteries lately, you know a smart INVESTMENT IN A BATTERY CHARGER is something that will pay for itself in no time flat.

When it does come time to replace your rechargeable batteries: Do be aware that HIGHER-CAPACITY batteries are available. So you may see NiCd batteries available in 1000maH (milli-amp hour) versus the, say, 600mAh batteries that originally came with your fixture. Or path lights that came with 1500mAh Ni-Mh batteries you might try a set of 2100mAh cells. You may find the slight premium in price for a denser, longer-life cell - but it may help your outdoor solar LED lighting efforts shine brighter, longer, and stronger through the night.

Energy-Saving LED Lighting Solutions

Landscape lights provide numerous benefits for modern homeowners including safety, energy efficient and economical. Landscaping light can increase security outdoors by discouraging potential intruders, light up paths, pools, drives and entry areas. With LED landscape lighting your landscape can be enjoyed not only during the day but extending into the evening hours as well. Your landscapes design can take on dramatic new look and showcase architectural and water features - or plant silhouettes with dramatic lighting techniques.

The types of fixtures you buy - and how you creatively place them makes them more versatile than you think. Some common outdoor light placement techniques are:

Direct Uplighting - focuses light and directs attention on an object such as a shrub, tree or landscape additions like an arbor or gazebo. Depending on the size, maturity and location of a plant a bullet or well type outdoor lighting fixture could be specified. It all depends on what needs to be illuminated outdoors. Use Angled Uplighting when there's an adjectant block or stone wall, fence or building to cast shadow textures onto.

Path Lighting - outlines a landscape path or walkway a deck or patio where safe night access is required. Outdoor LED solar or low voltage path light fixtures direct light down and outward. To prevent glare, path fixtures are shielded on top. Equal measured spacing helps convey a travel path. On more curved walkways - closer placement of each fixure helps visitors navigate with more certainty.

Downlighting - is a technique that illuminates outdoor areas for safety, security and aesthetics. Fixtures and lamps are selected for the required brightness and amount of illumination. These lamps are usually placed above eye level.

Flood vs Spot Lighting - Floods imply a wide beam, Spot lights a much narrower beam width. Choose spotlights to cast controlled an focused beam on garden statuary, fountains, or points of interest.

Backlighting, or Silhouette Lighting - gives special effect by illuminating large outdoor surface areas like walls using a flood light fixture. This causes objects in front of the lighted surface to appear as silhouettes.

Wash Lighting - Consider using multiple color lights against a wall, fence or building to cast a spectrum of interest. More distant placement of colored flood lights can blur and smooth the color transitions between shades. Or conversely, uplighting very close against a wall can produce a controlled upshot of color.

Led Landscaping Design Ideas

Decide which kind of LED lights you want to use: solar-powered or low-voltage powered lights. Solar lights have no cost of operation and can be located most anywhere, but 12-volt lights can be more dependable and a dawn to dusk timer more precise.

Diagram the garden, walkways, features of interest and other areas you plan to light and think about what kind of lighting effects you want to create. Stroll through your neighborhood or leaf through a landscape magazine for inspiration.

Use spotlights to draw attention to trees or flowers and to create silhouette effects that cast light behind the object. Choose "up lighting" at the base of walls, trees and other objects for a more dramatic lighting effect. Choose "down lights" to illuminate wide areas and walkways and to increase security. Remember fixtures labled as 'spots' have a much narrower, focused beam-width than 'floods'.

Decide which theme or style of light fixture will complement each area of your landscape. The style of your home should influence your choice. For instance, a Craftsman home may look just right with Arts and Crafts-style lighting, whereas a Victorian-style home will look better with more ornate, antique-style lighting.

Look for areas where you may want to use colored LED lights to add a different feel to the landscaping. Many of the latest Ultra-Bright LEDs have a cool white color, or choose Amber LED fixtures for a warmer, softer look.

Buy LED lights with one or two diodes for a gentle, moody glow - or more LED diodes for brighter lights and for safety and security needs.

LED's - Evolution Into Lighting Revolution

LED's are utterly revolutionizing our notion of a "Light Bulb". Nearly a 130 years after the introduction of a carbon filament encased bulb as we know it, LED's are sweeping across broad categories of everyday living products - as well as very novel lighting applications and designs. For many of us, our first experience of LED's were simply a tiny point of dim Red light used as an Off/On indicator lamp for electronic products starting in the 1960's.

Oh how things have changed! And it isn't just about the range of LED colors now possible - or advancements to super-bright LEDs - it's now about the insanely growing list of innovative products being made that go way, waaaayyy beyond that really handy little LED that might be attached to your keychain...

LED Technology - Lighting YOUR Future

How Does A LED - Light Emitting Diode Work
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are a source of continuous light with a high luminescence efficiency. A simple twin-element semiconductor diode is encased in a clear epoxy dome that acts as a lens. Two dissimilar doped semiconductor materials can produce light when a voltage is applied to the junction region between the materials.
