A water garden feature is often the highlight and focal point for many gardens - and they deserve to be lighted at night. Rather than ordinary LED path and general purpose landscape light -- spot-lighting in particular.

Underwater submersible landscape lights - whether solar LED - or low-votage halogen are ideally placed under a fountain-head for attention getting uplighting. Or Light fixtures placed beside and beneath water courses and falls to high-light the sparkle of the water. Especially within gated communities and housing developments, it can be difficult to distinguish YOUR home from the often very similar designed houses on your lane or cul-du-sac.

There's a bit of an art to landscaping with solar LED path lights. Whether your garden style is formal and geometric -- or informal and very organic in layout.

In more formal garden settings, you really want to place path lights with a good degree of precision to reinforce the landscape style. Careful measuring and placement -- equidistant spacing along walkways helps. Using pairs precisely opposite along paths, grouping in fours on geometric corners helps guide both your eyes, and your guests navigating a nighttime landscape.

Alternate spacing of path lighting along curved walks (tho again consistently measured and spaced) helps maintain a visual aesthetic. This works well on the outside edges and inside curve of more meandering paths to help guests be aware of the wandering route.

Regardless of your garden style -- pairing solar lights at the bottom of steps, and again at the top of the stairway helps indicate where they start, where they end - and insures safe navigation at night.

Given the affordability of many solar landscape light sets - lean towards MORE rather than fewer, especially since cost per light is lower in quantity. There may be instances where a special garden feature deserves to be surrounded by 3 or more lights -- in addition to those needed along the route.

A unique kind of LED light fixture are SOLAR SHED LIGHTS: one ideal for un-wired outbuildings that don't have electricity. Ultimately, they're indoor lights that may be LED, Halogen or Flourescent - but have an outside solar panel to recharge them. Shed lights also tend to have an easy-reach pull cord, so you can turn on the lights easily on entering the darkend shed. Most come with long 15' or so cords to allow maximum versatility in both the solar panel - and light fixture's placement.

Most (but not all) solar path and yard lighting sets come with rechargeable NiCd - or Nickle Cadmium batteries. In the bigger world of electronic products and rechargers we've seen NiMh - Nickle Metal Hydride batteries become far more common and readily available off the shelf. Regardless of which your solar lights came with, there may be reasons to stay with the type of batteries that came with your solar lighting set.

The charging and operational characteristics of NiCd and NiMh batteries are very different. For example, NiCD batteries can store a charge longer and drain slower on the shelf - and can help your solar LED fixtures perform well after an extended sequence of overcast days. NiCd batteries also are more in-line with the slow, daily trickle-charging they'd experience during daylight hours - and not the rapid-charging that is expected of NiMh batteries for consumer electronics. The circuitry and design of the solar cell panel in the light itself is optimized for the specific kind of battery it originally came with - and swapping battery types may not be in your best interests in terms of overnight longevity performance, light output, or the life of the solar charging circuitry.

That said, it can't hurt to try. I have some old Malibu LED tier lights that came with 600Mah NiCad batteries that I swapped a few 2000mAh Sanyo Eneloop NiMh cells into and they're certainly performing better than the 4 year old NiCd ones - that's for sure.

If you've priced Duracell batteries lately, you know a smart INVESTMENT IN A BATTERY CHARGER is something that will pay for itself in no time flat.

When it does come time to replace your rechargeable batteries: Do be aware that HIGHER-CAPACITY batteries are available. So you may see NiCd batteries available in 1000maH (milli-amp hour) versus the, say, 600mAh batteries that originally came with your fixture. Or path lights that came with 1500mAh Ni-Mh batteries you might try a set of 2100mAh cells. You may find the slight premium in price for a denser, longer-life cell - but it may help your outdoor solar LED lighting efforts shine brighter, longer, and stronger through the night.

Landscape lights provide numerous benefits for modern homeowners including safety, energy efficient and economical. The types of fixtures you buy - and how you creatively place them makes them more versatile than you think. Some common outdoor light placement techniques are:


Direct Uplighting - focuses light and directs attention on an object such as a shrub, tree or landscape additions like an arbor or gazebo. Depending on the size, maturity and location of a plant a bullet or well type outdoor lighting fixture could be specified. It all depends on what needs to be illuminated outdoors. Use Angled Uplighting when there's an adjectant block or stone wall, fence or building to cast shadow textures onto.


Path Lighting - outlines a landscape path or walkway a deck or patio where safe night access is required. Outdoor LED solar or low voltage path light fixtures direct light down and outward. To prevent glare, path fixtures are shielded on top. Equal measured spacing helps convey a travel path. On more curved walkways - closer placement of each fixure helps visitors navigate with more certainty.


Downlighting - is a technique that illuminates outdoor areas for safety, security and aesthetics. Fixtures and lamps are selected for the required brightness and amount of illumination. These lamps are usually placed above eye level.


Flood vs Spot Lighting - Floods imply a wide beam, Spot lights a much narrower beam width. Choose spotlights to cast controlled an focused beam on garden statuary, fountains, or points of interest.


Backlighting, or Silhouette Lighting - gives special effect by illuminating large outdoor surface areas like walls using a flood light fixture. This causes objects in front of the lighted surface to appear as silhouettes.


Wash Lighting - Consider using multiple color lights against a wall, fence or building to cast a spectrum of interest. More distant placement of colored flood lights can blur and smooth the color transitions between shades. Or conversely, uplighting very close against a wall can produce a controlled upshot of color.

Decide which kind of LED lights you want to use: solar-powered or low-voltage powered lights. Solar lights have no cost of operation and can be located most anywhere, but 12-volt lights can be more dependable and a dawn to dusk timer more precise.

Diagram the garden, walkways, features of interest and other areas you plan to light and think about what kind of lighting effects you want to create. Stroll through your neighborhood or leaf through a landscape magazine for inspiration.

Use spotlights to draw attention to trees or flowers and to create silhouette effects that cast light behind the object. Choose "up lighting" at the base of walls, trees and other objects for a more dramatic lighting effect. Choose "down lights" to illuminate wide areas and walkways and to increase security. Remember fixtures labled as 'spots' have a much narrower, focused beam-width than 'floods'.

Decide which theme or style of light fixture will complement each area of your landscape. The style of your home should influence your choice. For instance, a Craftsman home may look just right with Arts and Crafts-style lighting, whereas a Victorian-style home will look better with more ornate, antique-style lighting.

Look for areas where you may want to use colored LED lights to add a different feel to the landscaping. Many of the latest Ultra-Bright LEDs have a cool white color, or choose Amber LED fixtures for a warmer, softer look.

Buy LED lights with one or two diodes for a gentle, moody glow - or more LED diodes for brighter lights and for safety and security needs.
